The mourning period has set in. After eight years of continuous use, my black vegan sparkly 11 eyelet Dr. Martins and I must part ways. This is a sad, momentous occasion for me.

These boots have been through Europe, much of the United States, and Canada. They were on my feet when I first fell in love, drank, and learned how to drive. Each hole has a different story, and each pair of laces it has worn were friends. Putting my boots in the garbage was like putting a pet to sleep.

My first pair of Docs, bought when I was twelve years old from months of saved allowances. I was at Houston’s Shoes in Berkeley, on Shattuck, and they were in the window on display. It was love at first sight.

Now, they are no longer as sparkly, or black. The canvas uppers are shriveling, eaten away by all the steps my feet have taken in them. There is a layer of grime on the outside that no number of washings can get rid of, and several of the grommets have fallen out. The laces,in my boots lifetime, have been replaced six times. The soles, which once had ridges, are now smooth, shiny rubber.

Goodbye boots. I will miss you.

10 minutes ago, I finally won the pair of Doc's on eBay that I have been trying to get my hands on for weeks now. Yay!

Little did I know this seller, the only person I've seen offer this shoe brand new in my size (they have been auctioning 1 pair each week for the last 3 weeks) has a store front outside of eBay.

The auction checkout process dumped me into her store so I had to take a look around. I was a little bummed to find out my winning bid price was higher than the price she was charging in her online store. I hate it when that happens.

I whined a little at first because I am a bargain shopper but when I saw other pairs of docs I liked in my size for only $30 & $40 I freaked. I no longer cared that I paid $4 more for my shoes through the auction. I had found a gold mine!

I ended up picking up a second pair of the shoe I won in the auction and another pair in a different style since it was only $30! I love that shoe and I have only seen it one other place in my search for it. Not to mention, they are completely sold out and do not expect more to come in. Besides, had I purchased it there, I would have only walked away with one pair of shoes for a $100. Today I walked away with 3 pairs of Doc's including tax & shipping for under $130.

How kick ass is that?! This bargain shopper is one happy camper right now. Lucky for you I just discovered and joined this tribe today.... ; )

They do not have a huge selection but there are several styles to choose from. It's definitely worth checking out because if you find a style you like in your size, you too will be a happy camper because it's the best deal ever!

Here is the link to the store: http://www.marketworks.com/StoreFrontProfiles/deluxeSFshop.aspx?sid=1&sfid=67366&c=586896&search_text=&srch=48353275&page=1

So here's the skinny:I've had my docs for, count em, ~14~ years now. I originally bought them when I was 11(it's amazing that my feet didn't grow much in the years that followed.) I don't know if I owe it to good workmanship on the part of the shoemaker, or good hygiene, but I swear to you they still smell like leather.

Though, they are beginning to look worn...should I break down and buy another pair? It's almost blasphemy at this point!

Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began in the town of Seeshaupt, Germany in 1945, when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Alps.

To facilitate walking during healing, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. By using old rubber tires, he made soles with air trapped within them.
By 1959 Dr. Klaus Maertens and his inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens.

At first, many manufacturers thought the special sole was merely a gimmick.
One year later, in 1960, the vintage 1460 Dr. Martens boot was born.
The 1460 boot became the premier boot for the working class man. Dr. Martens first provided the shoes to dockhands, then policemen, then postal workers. As the 60's bore on the shoes became the fashion for a generation.
Today, more than forty years later, a continuous succession of cultural renegades have adopted the 1460 as a sign of their independence, uniqueness, and individuality.

And the main reason for the shoes, comfort and durability, still holds as true today as it did for Dr. Maerten over a century ago.
